Keeping people with mental illness out of the criminal justice system by addressing a broad range of issues in a therapeutic court

The Perth mental health court is a therapeutic court that has been in operation since 2013. This presentation will briefly describe its’ evolution and current status. The presentation will be by different members of the interagency, multidisciplinary team. The role of collaboration both within and external to the court will be discussed and how this is being researched. There will be feedback from a fact finding mission to America and comparison with their mental health courts. Problems encountered and problems solved will be discussed. An optimal Mental Health Court model will be presented.


Biography:

Dr Adam Brett is a consultant psychiatrist. He was the director of the Community Forensic Mental Health Service in Perth. He has worked in the Mental Health Court in WA since it’s inception in 2013.
